Sit beside the question.

A child hears that dinosaurs walked here, or that stars are made of hydrogen, and the useful next sentence is not “because science said so.” It is: how could anyone know?

This is a place for that habit. Curiosity asks. Evidence answers. Sometimes the answer is that we do not know yet.

Who it is for

Children from 4 to 12. The objects are the same. The science is the same. We do not make the first look less true. We make it complete sooner. Do not tell the child which age they are. There is no baby door and no big-kid door.

Depth, not dilution

Picture first. Question second. Experience third. Names when they help. Mechanism deeper. Sources deepest. A four-year-old can finish without opening Keep looking. A twelve-year-old should still find something intellectually real behind that door.

With a four-year-old

Sit with the picture and one question. The prism. The footprint. The pendulum. Look. Press Listen if you want Eve to read. Eve, xAI’s Eve voice, will follow the page and wait at Keep looking. You can stop there. That is a whole visit.

Payne, Lehmann, and radial velocity wait until you stay. They are not hidden as a secret. They are deeper in the same room.

With an eight to twelve-year-old

The first look is the door, not the whole room. Let them keep looking. Behind that door is a lab bench: measured lines, wave records, names, checks. They should not feel sent to a simpler place.

The screen is a door

This is not a game. There are no points, streaks, or unlocks. Six beautiful minutes, a new question, and then the sky or the ground is a successful visit. Each investigation asks the child to cause a clue on the page, then to try something outside. Hands that build belong to Try This. This house is the question.

What to do with a child

Let them sit with the claim before the clue. If they guess, check together. A changed mind is one of the strongest things in the room. Do not keep score.

What this is not

It is not a lesson in distrust. Accepted ideas are not suspicious because they are accepted. Experts are not magicians, and they are not villains. A seismologist who has spent years with wave records is more relevant to Earth’s interior than a random opinion. Methods, instruments, and independent checks are why.

It is also not a quiz. There are no points, streaks, or fireworks. Wrong is not punished. Evidence changes the answer.

Observation and inference

We try to keep those distinct. A dark line in starlight is an observation. “The star contains hydrogen” is an inference. A cutaway Earth is a model. A dinosaur painting is not a photograph. If a child leaves asking “how do they know that?” about something else, the work did what it came to do.

Listening
